Found Objects Sculpture

 1.      The name of my sculpture is the “The Roadrunner”.

2.      The sculpture is 6” wide from foot to foot and it stands 14” tall.

3.      List of all items used in “The Roadrunner”.

    a.       2” cast iron water pipe cap = left foot.

    b.      Plated ball bearing = right foot.

    c.       Scrap piece of iron flat bar = right leg.

    d.      Scrap piece of 3/16” iron rod = left leg.

    e.       Large 3.5” bolt = Hip (The bolt head is the right hip end).

    f.       Large Nut = Left hip end.

    g.      Large 9/16” center nut = Hip to body connector.

    h.      Really old aluminum garden tool handle = Tail.

    i.        Valve Spring from an old V8 = Torso and neck.

    j.        Old brass hose line connector with valve = Neck and head.

    k.      Old bass broken hose end = Beak.

4.      I welded everything together to be assembled. I used a bench vise and a few pairs of C-shaped vise grips. I did not grind or modify the shape of any of the objects. Not grinding the metal to make it raw made this experience much more difficult to weld.

5.      I came into this creative process by finding about 100 objects in my garage and then figure out what my options were going to be. In my garage I have tons of old things. See this is my great grand father’s old garage. He has tons of old sprinkler parts, car/engine parts, and various old school tools. The moment I found the hose line outlet with a valve and the spring I knew that was going to be the neck and head of my new bird sculpture. After knowing my theme I just built the rest out of the most logical objects that I had around.

6.      I really wanted to use the tail I found, but the object was made out of aluminum. Aluminum is really difficult to weld to iron and steel. When I originally tack welded the tail on it got too brittle from the heat and broke off. So I had to set the settings on my welder just right. I had to make sure I didn’t get the area being welded too hot. If it was too hot it would either melt or after it cooled it would become too brittle. I originally had a normal large spring for the neck, but I couldn’t get the weld to stick to the heavy duty bolt and kept melting the spring in half. I found the valve spring out of an old V8 engine. This heavy duty spring would be able to be welded with being cut in half by the extreme heats of welding.

7.      I am extremely satisfied with the results of my found objects sculpture. I didn’t know exactly what I was going to do at first, but after figuring out what to build I knew the exactly image I was going for. Then I started welding it together and it came out precisely how I wanted it. The only thing I would change is I would have found a heavier tail so I could have balanced the head and tail on the hips. So “The Roadrunner” would balance and swing on the hips.

Note: I have not modified any object used. Even the same color or aging was used. The only modification that would be done was the welding and the coloring from the welding.
